My First Day as an Attorney-at-Law

The inevitable finally happened on the 27th of August 2008, and i took oaths as an Attorney-at-law before the Chief Justice yesterday. So now i am an Attorney-at-Law of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka :)

The ceremony itself was pretty nice. I have to say that contrary to the boring build up i actually enjoyed the ceremony. The Chief looked pretty interested in the ceremony, and i thought that was impressive given the large number of lawyers and the predictably monotomous oaths!

Family was represented by Umma, Deda and Cubbi. Anita too tagged along and was super-helpful throughout. Not only was she a dear friend but she also became my photographer and videocamerawoman!!

Mr Sirimanne too came to see our ceremony and it was very sweet of him to wait till the end when i finished taking oaths. Tharu and i managed to get a pic with Sir for RI times sake.

Well, today was my first day as an Attorney at court, and i made the Royal blunder~ forgot to wear my gown!!! Its not that i totally forgot, but i left it behind in the front hall when the morning rush happened with running to office and giving Anita a ride too.

I hope i rememeber to take it tomorrow!

Shame Rushdie

Its almost a week since the court vacations, and already time is running out!! Umma and Deda have a function in kandy and i am contemplating whether i should pay the hill capital a visit, especially considering that i havent been there in almost 5 years!! Its almost unbelievable!!

In the meantime i have inished reading 'Miss Pettigrew lives for A Day''. Its an awesome feel-good book and makes me think nothing is impossible! Winifred Watson writes beautifully and this was a very easy to read book. My first Persephone book was most enjoyable and i will now surely read more of the classics.
Now i have started on Salman Rushdie's 'Shame'....... he is obviosuly over-rated!!! As much as he tries, my second Rushdie book has failed to please me at all. Me thinks that courting controversy is very well for book sales, but there certainly needs to more than that for a reader to be engrossed. Maybe i am biased, but i fail to see his greatness. He is good, not Great!

''There it is..and they are covering it with shit''. 'It' in my mind is a reference to the man himself!

Postponement

I was supposed to be taking Oaths as an Attorney at Law today. It was all finally going to be over and done with, But guess what happened? Thanks to our super-efficient South Asian regional bloc SAARC and its inseparable conjoined-twin 'Security', the Ceremony has been postponed to God only knows when!?!

Its particularly irritating given the fact that it has been almost a month since i finished my apprenticeship with Mr Aziz.
Hopefully, once court reopens after vacation is should be ablt to make applications for Special oaths which is what i should have done intially i suppose!

Although it might have been a controversial day in court due to the Slave Island Case being taken up by the Supreme Court, i opted to stay out of court. Why? because it was raining, and rainy days in my world, are No-work days! Add to this the fact that Mr Aziz & Co will not be in court as well, there was pretty much no incentive to turn up!
